Across Canada, a growing number of farmers are continuing the good work of adopting management practices that benefit the environment and their bottom lines.
The new Million Acre Challenge Program provides farmers with cost-sharing and agronomic supports to adopt practical, proven methods that improve soil health, water quality, and reduce emissions. Through their participation in the program, farmers can also set themselves up to explore future opportunities related to the marketing of the environmental outcomes they generate, including decreased GHG, preserved water quality, and increased biodiversity.
Together, we’re advancing a future where Canadian farms continue to thrive economically and environmentally.
Participating farmers are making shifts that continue the good work of:
→ Healthier soils absorb water more effectively, hold nutrients longer, and support stronger root systems.
→ The targeted use of fertilizers and other inputs help reduce costs and improve long-term productivity.
→ More diverse crop rotations, beneficial insects, and natural habitats support pollinators, maintain nutrient balance in the soil, and help to control pests.
→ Crops that are resilient to changing weather conditions contribute to reduced economic volatility.
→ Farms that practice climate-smart agriculture help to protect groundwater, reduce erosion, and support wildlife
These practices are grounded in science, informed by experience, and led by farmers.
This program helps farmers tap into new opportunities by aligning farm management with growing demand for climate-smart, low-footprint agri-food systems. This is about farming in ways that focus on profitability, risk reduction, and long-term viability.
We’re working alongside farmers, researchers, agri-businesses, and community partners to:
This is not a one-size-fits-all program. It’s a flexible, farmer-facing approach shaped by farmers, agronomists, and leaders across the agri-food system.
If you’re ready to continue strengthening your land, your business, and your bottom line — we’re ready to work with you.
